DOJ: Suspect Faces Multiple Charges After Shooting at White House Correspondents’ Dinner

The Justice Department announced on April 25 that the suspect in the White House Correspondents’ Dinner incident is facing at least two charges and will be arraigned after the weekend.

During a press conference alongside Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro said the suspect is scheduled to appear in federal district court on Monday. She added that additional charges are likely as the investigation continues to develop.

According to Pirro, the current charges include using a firearm during a violent crime and assaulting a federal officer with a dangerous weapon.

Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said both the suspect and a Secret Service agent were taken to the hospital following the incident.

In an earlier briefing at the White House, President Donald Trump confirmed that a Secret Service agent had been shot but said he later spoke with the agent, who was “doing great.”

Trump also noted that the suspect is from California and that authorities were heading to his residence. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, who also spoke at the briefing, said the investigation is still ongoing.

U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro said it was evident, based on the information available so far, that the suspect intended to cause as much harm and damage as possible.

Interim D.C. Police Chief Jeff Carroll stated that the suspect was carrying a shotgun, a handgun, and several knives. He added that as the individual rushed through a security checkpoint, Secret Service personnel quickly intercepted him.

In a statement shared on social media following the incident, Secret Service Director Sean Curran commended his agents for their response.

“Tonight demonstrated exactly what our dedicated men and women do every day to protect those under their care,” he said.

He added that the suspect’s capture highlights the effectiveness of the agency’s multi-layered security system.
